Known for its unique flavour and glowing golden colour,  Turmeric is traditionally a highlight of cooking in places from India to Nepal to Southeast Asia.

8d180c13-84a6-4acc-8c18-63d935b39991

This special spice has gained quite a lot of attention over the last few years due to further studies on its super healing benefits!

Long before there were prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines, spices were the foundation of traditional medicine practices all around the world! Turmeric contains a constituent called curcumin which is what everyone is raving about. Curcumin found in turmeric is proven to have anti-inflammatory benefits to help with pain and inflammation in the body from aching joins, redness and swelling. Turmeric is believed to powerfully support the body’s healing processes.

Also turmeric powder used topically was traditionally used by Indian brides-to-be as a beauty facial mask to give them a glowing dewy complexion! This is due to its high antioxidants, anti bacterial properties, vitamin c and zinc to give you glowing healthy skin.

Turmeric is claimed to be your liver’s best friend! Assisting in phase 2 of detoxification of the liver – which aids in eliminating excess hormones and toxic waste materials from the body

Turmeric has also been proven to have immune boosting properties to help you fight infection and recover from colds and flu faster.

How to add this miracle spice to your diet?

You can pick up turmeric root powder from our bulk food pantry here at The Farm Wholefoods at Potts Point and Neutral Bay!

You can also find it in your local health food stores (organic is best).

One of our favourite and tastiest ways to consume it is in our Golden Turmeric Latte

Recipe –

  • 130ml of coconut milk
  • 1 teaspoon of organic turmeric powder
  • ¼ teaspoon organic ginger powder
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of coconut blossom sugar

Heat on coconut milk the stove on low heat until desired drinking temperature.

Add the rest of the ingredients (extra turmeric if you wish) and stir until combined.

Serve in a glass and sprinkle with cinnamon. Perfect healing beverage during winter and whenever your feeling low.

ANTIOXIDANTS

Coffee beans are a potent source of antioxidants which help fight free radicals in the body, they also help keep your body healthy at the micro-level by protecting our cells from damage. Coffee beans actaully a higher antioxidant activity than cacao, blueberries and green tea! So drink up!

TOPICALLY ANTI-AGING

when used as an exfoliator, ground coffee beans can prevent collagen damage that results in wrinkles. Coffee helps with blood circulation – helping prevent cellulite, giving you supple skin and that rosy glow.  The concentration of essential fatty acids in coffee beans may also protect against cell damage, which leads to dry thin skin and other skin conditions. Make your own coffee body scrub with ground coffee beans, coconut oil and essential oils! It’s simple and effective.

ITS ANTI-INFLAMMATORY

With coffee’s secret weapon caffeine – Caffeine constricts blood vessels under the skin when applied topically, which assists in reducing redness, swelling and puffiness. Add drop or two of cold drip coffee to your moisturiser to help brighten the complexion!

EHANCE YOUR EXCERISE PERFORMANCE

Studies have shown that moderate caffeine consumption – up to about 500 mg, coffee assist in battling fatigue and enabling you to exercise longer!

*Tip – Always keep hydrated with pure water before drinking coffee and after exercise.

SUPPORTS YOUR LIVER

The antioxidants win again! The high level of antioxidants in Coffee beans play a role in reducing oxidative stress and helps the liver perform its important job of detoxification!

Tip – Try your coffee with almond or coconut milk! It’s dairy free and better on your digestion, plus it tastes delicious!

Your daily cup of coffee also delivers more than just a rich, earthy aroma and a delicious pick-me-up — it boasts some intriguing health benefits as well.

Diet Diary – Mikaela

“The Farm Wholefoods is where I spend a lot of my time, I believe that I need a big wholesome breakfast to fuel me for a typical busy morning at our Potts Point store and while I’m there I always need to keep my hydration up, my energy peeking and mind clear and focused. I am obsessed with our raw mixed nuts from our bulk pantry that really do sustain me between meals. They provide me with satiety and lasting energy I require while serving our amazing customers preparing meals and restocking our shelves. Sipping on our organic coconut water is such a great hydration hit, and its so delicous! Lunch usually consists of getting a little creative each day with wholefoods. Lately I have been making filling smoothies with super-foods from our bulk pantry; I like to use cacao for its mood boosting properties, acai for antioxidants and maca for an energy boost. I also chuck in a banana and some almond milk to make it dairy free , filling and creamy.” –

Well-Being Dairy –  Mikaela

” Count me out of cardio, and put me down for Yoga! ‘Restorative Yin’ yoga is what I’m crazy about at the moment. I think the combination of movements, stretching, toning and balancing while being mindful is one of the most wonderful forms of exercise. I also like to do Pilates, having the control and using my core strength feels awesome. When my brain just won’t shut off, I try and find the time to mediate and practice some deep breathing. This really helps tune in to my body. There is also this wonderful saltwater pool in Nth Sydney that is just the perfect get away from the city life. There is just something about floating in salt water and swimming my stress away. It reminds me of home and keeps me grounded.” Mikaela – Assistant Store manager.

Diet Dairy – Harry

“On a typical day the The Farm, I’m standing on my feet most of the day. As head barista I do have the pleasure of creating my own custom caffeine hit from our Single Origin Coffee Blend to give me that boost I’m after in the early hours of the morning. During the day, I like to keep sustained with healthy fats and lean proteins. Luckily we have a great options like that here. I tend to snack on some free range boiled eggs with our smoked atlantic salmon on our famous gluten free bread. If I am after something a little lighter, I tend to skip the bread and enjoy some fresh spinach with poached chicken breast and a few nuts and seeds for my omega 3’s. Also our protein power smoothie is great to keep me going. Very tasty” .

Well-Being  Diary -Harry

“Exercise is big part of my life. It makes me feel alive and healthy. Those endorphins really do make your mind go into a positive state and i am proud of myself after each session. I tend to hit the gym in the afternoon as I work from 6 am. I like exercising alone as it gives me some ‘me time’ to reflect on myself and also to focus. I like to stick to both cardio and strength training. This keeps me fit and helps build muscle mass. In combination with high protein and healthy energy dense foods, it gives me the energy to train for longer”. Harry – Barista

Diet Dairy –  Ida

” 6 am starts don’t leave much time for a big breakfast, When I arrive to The Farm, I make an alkalising green smoothie. If I’m craving something sweet, I add some mango. This smoothie completely wakes me up, keeps me alert, focused and ready for the morning. Nibbling on almonds is my ultimate habit here, the organic ones just taste so good! I also make my own almond milk with them as a dairy free option. I combine organic almonds with our alkaline water, medjool dates and cinnamon. so creamy! Being vegan, I also like to get a lot of my protein from plant sources such as seeds, nuts and avocados. Nothing beats smashed avocado on toast! I also like to snack on chia pudding. Chia combined it with our housemade cashew cream provides me with more protein, fiber and healthy fats to keep me full and vibrant for the day!”

Well-Being Diary – Ida

“Moving from Finland to Australia I am constantly attracted to the beach! I love being around the water and enjoying the sunshine, it makes me feel free and happy. I am often at Bondi and walk and run from there to Bronte or Coogee -its just so beautiful. Breathing in the fresh air is so calming and clears the mind. I also like to hit the gym –  I tend to focus on cardio to keep active and in shape”. Ida – Food Preparation Manager

Diet Dairy – Verity

“Hydration is number one for me. I always keep a bottle of filtered water on hand’. Feeling hydrated and replenished keeps my mind clear aids in detoxification. While I’m at The Farm I like to snack raw nuts, fresh fruit and vegetables . These provide the antioxidants, fiber, protein and fats which make me feel great throughout the day. Having energy dense foods like these eliminate the cravings for any sweets or sugar. When lunch time comes around I tend to experiment with different smoothies.  My favourite combination at the moment is – mango, banana, chia seeds, coconut water, coconut yoghurt, spinach and lime. It is delightful during these hot summer days. I enjoy sipping on cold pressed or freshly squeezed juices which make me feel vibrant and nourished straight away. – Verity – Farm Store Assistant

Diet Dairy – Erin

” Breakfast calls for a warm cosy bowl of organic porridge made with vanilla bean and a splash of almond milk. Topped with some mixed berries, this is a sweet and healthy way to start the day. For those hotter mornings, I enjoy The Farm’s bircher muesli which a creamy filling combo of rolled oats, yogurt, almonds, pumpkin seeds, apple and orange. Delicious!. I tend to compliment my breakfast with a flat white to keep me alert for those early mornings. I cook at home often and use as much wholefoods as possible. Taking home-cooked meals to work is comforting and keeps me full and nourished throughout the day. I like to use lots of fresh vegetables, eggs, organic brown rice, wholewheat pasta, olive oil, grass fed meat or poultry and herbs and spices to mix the flavours up a little. Erin – Store Manager

Making time for exercise can be tedious. We know what’s it’s like to have it on your mind one minute, and then get distracted by that show on tv you wanted to catch up on, or time getting away while surfing the internet. Always telling yourself you’ll get around to it but always making it the last priority.

With the 80/20 rule- Ideally you should only be skipping on exercise 20% of the time. Try and commit to excising most days of the week whether it’s yoga, pilates, gymnastics, or even boxing will get your heart pumping and oxygen rich blood circulating your beautiful body making you feel great! This will keep you fit and in great shape. Even going for a nice walk counts too!

Decadent & delicious! Here at The Farm Wholefoods we absolutely love all things chocolate. But we also love the kind of chocolate that good for us rather than one laden with refined sugars, preservatives and lots of dairy.

We have been busy experimenting in the Farm Wholefoods kitchen and have created a healthy, creamy chocolate and hazelnut spread or ‘Notella” that is perfect for spreading on your morning toast topped with strawberries or eat it right off the spoon for a little snack.

Our Notella is gluten free, refined sugar free and dairy free too! The ultimate healthy indulgence..

Notella Recipe

Ingredients –

  • You can pick these up from our bulk pantry at The Farm!

1 Tablespoon of Cacao Power  –

2 Tablespoons of Organic Coconut oil –

1/2 Teaspoon of vanilla essence or Powder

1/4 Cup of Raw hazelnuts

1 Teaspoon of Maple Syrup

Method –

In a food processor – Medium size ( a vita mix or nutri bullet will work well aslo) Add your hazelnuts and cacao powder then blitz until the hazelnuts have turned into crumbs

Add your maple syrup, vanilla essence and coconut oil until all combined.

Keep blitzing away until smooth and creamy.( If you would like it crunchy, add a few crushed hazelnuts to the mixture at the end to add some texture)

Scoop out your creamy chocolate spread and place into a glass jar and store in a cool dry place

*Note – Coconut turns into a solid when refrigerated so it’s best to leave your spread at room temperature to maintain it’s consistency.

Hope you find it delicious and make it a wholesome staple in your pantry for when those sweet craving come along!

There is no question that consuming a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals for overall health and wellness, but, one very important component of our balanced diet is healthy sources of Fat, yes I said it, Fat is one of the most vital nutrients to achieve optimal health. Fat helps the body in so many ways, from brain health, balancing hormones and also promoting healthy smooth skin.

These types of healthy fats come from one of mother nature’s gift – Organic raw NUTS!

Almonds, Macadamias, Brazil nuts, Cashews… Nuts seem to have it all. They all naturally contain there own monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and oils, along with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants! all these nutrients are essential to the human body to function at its best and protect you from disease.

Essential: the body cannot make these fats on its own, we must obtain them from our diet. Lack of these essential fatty acids can cause skin issues, inflammation, infertility, mood and memory problems and also promote heart disease.

While nuts are high in calories, eating just a handful a day promotes a feeling of fullness that fends off the craving for less healthy fat-laden or sugar-filled processed food. Fats are also a great source of energy to keep your stamina up and help with memory and concentration.

Almonds, pecans and walnuts are all rich in the minerals zinc which is critical for immunity and reproductive function, strict vegetarians sometimes don’t get enough. All you beautiful vegans out there start munching away for some more zinc!

There are so many easy ways to incorporate these nutrient dense babies into your daily diet. They are versatile and portable!

A small bag of raw nuts can easily be stashed in your suitcase, handbag or backpack, ready to give you an instant, non-perishable hunger-banishing energy snack in the office, on the way to work, or on the trail.

Other simple ways to add to your diet –

  • Add to cereals to add texture and to keep you fuller for longer.
  • Create a gluten-free crust for baked fish or chicken.
  • Add a handful in your favourite breakfast or lunch smoothie!

Paleo, the latest and hottest health craze at the minute, But what exactly is the ‘ Paleo Diet’?  Is it right for you? And how can we incorporate Paleo into our daily life?

In today’s world we are largely desk-bound, consuming loads of processed and packaged foods, living with chronic stress, and not giving yourself enough sleep. All of this can make us unwell, overweight and depressed.

Being a new year, every body wants to make a healthy change to their lives but this change can be difficult. Lasting change is even harder, and a big lifestyle overhaul like adopting a Paleo diet can seem overwhelming. Sticking to a healthy diet in today’s world is never easy, but the first few months of transition can often be the hardest part as you try to get used to a completely new way of looking at food.

On your path to optimal health and wellness, the Paleo lifestyle draws it’s core principles from our ancestors who ate whole, unprocessed foods, moved more, slept better and stressed less. Studies have shown that getting back to simple, clean, nutrient dense wholefoods can contribute to overall health and wellness. Eating ‘Paleo” foods is a lot easier then you may think! Let’s see what simple foods are Paleo and what aren’t.

The Paleo foods include:

  • Grass-Fed Organic meats
  • Fish/seafood Wild Caught
  • Fresh fruits and veggies
  • Eggs Free Range
  • Nuts and seeds Organic
  • Healthy fats and oils (Olive, walnut, flaxseed, macadamia, avocado, coconut)

Chia seeds are loaded with omega 3 fats which supports brain health, hormonal health and skin health.

They are packed full of fiber and protein to keep you fuller for longer as they expand in your stomach due to absorbing water.

Chia seeds are high in antioxidants for helping the body keep healthy and strong. Antioxidants have amazing anti-ageing properties too!

How do you use chia? Well.. as they are almost tasteless, they can be combined with a number of foods both sweet and savory.

One of our Farm favourite recipes using chia seeds is, Overnight Cacao Chia Pudding,

We are inspired by a  recipe created by Dana, The Minimalist Baker who  loves cooking with simple wholefoods that are quick easy and only require minimal ingredients!

Here at The Farm, we enjoy supporting the Potts Point community and giving the gift of giving.

Rob Holt knows what it’s like to have nowhere to go on Christmas Day. For 18 months he was a rolling stone; homeless and addicted to alcohol and marijuana, failing to cope with a marriage breakdown. “I kinda hit a brick wall,” he says.

That was in 2009. By the following Christmas he had found a home and a new family, of sorts – the vagrants and volunteers of the Wayside Chapel, where he started a volunteer. This Friday will mark Mr Holt’s sixth Christmas on deck at Wayside, but it will be his first as a fully-fledged staffer.

“There’s no way I’d be anywhere else,” he says. “I’ve got other options [but] my choice is rather the Wayside because I’m surrounded by 800 family members, that’s how I feel.”

The Potts Point site is ground zero for the needy on Christmas, and its alfresco Hughes Street party has become the city’s largest such Christmas Day function. After a winter that saw more homeless people on the streets than any winter since 2009, the centre is gearing up for another marathon service.

Between 250 and 300 volunteers will assist in preparing an early breakfast, followed by a sermon by Reverend Graham Long and lunch. The charity’s “donate a plate” initiative has encouraged supporters to sponsor more than 500 meals at a cost of $25 a head; on Wednesday, Mr Holt was busy collecting last-minute donations from local businesses.

While a handful of Wayside volunteers are former guests, the majority are just kind souls who want to lend a hand and escape the constructs of the corporate world, says co-ordinator Lindy Antoniou. “They all say this is their three hours of sanity,” she jokes.

Felicity Powell helps out at Wayside once a week, but on Christmas Day she will bring her husband and two teenage children to wait tables at the big lunch. They’ve done it before and Ms Powell hopes it will remain part of the family’s Christmas routine once her son and daughter are adults.

“There are an awful lot of kids that don’t really get access to seeing what its like first hand for the disadvantaged in Sydney,” the 46-year-old from Mosman says. “It’s really grounding. There are a lot of people who get stuck in the cyber world, they get stuck in their own little lives – it’s really back to reality.”

Slots to volunteer on Christmas Day are opened in mid-November and are so popular there is an online portal to manage the short shifts. Tasks include making tea and coffee, supervising the jumping castle, moving furniture and even the chance to play disc jockey.

But the bountiful resources allow regular volunteers like Bill King, a former addict, to enjoy the day as a guest rather than a worker. For Mr King, 61, Christmas at Wayside is something of a reunion with old chums from the street and the chapel.

“To me, Christmas is for children,” he says. “Being an adult, it should be time to reflect on how your year has been. Did you achieve what your goals have been?”

Mango & coconut Chia parfait Recipe

Organic, vegan, dairy free & gluten free!

unnamed

This is the season for mangoes! Either fresh or dried, this tasty sweet fruit provides you with up to three times your recommended daily intake of Vitamin A and Vitamin C!  Vitamin C is an antioxidant important in protecting the body from infection and is required in the formation of collagen, a protein that gives structure to bones, cartilage, and muscles.

With this fruit of sunshine, we have created a summer breakfast chia parfait!  We have also made it extra delicious by topping it with our farm turmeric, mango and coconut glow bars which are full of antioxidants and not to mention are just delicious.

First step is to make your chia pudding mix, you will need:

0.5 cup chia seeds

1 cup coconut milk

1 cup water

a few drops of vanilla

Method: combine together in large bowl or container. Let set in fridge overnight.

In the morning make your muesli! You will need:

1 cup of Organic Almond, Coconut & Vanilla Bean Muesli( or other muesli of your choice)

3 dried apricots (chopped)

6 dried pineapple (chopped)

Handful dried incaberries (around 14)

(You find these ingredients in the Farm Wholefoods pantry)

Method: combine all together in bowl.

For the topping you will need:

1 mango

1 Glow Bar (we sell these delicious bars at the Farm Wholefoods)

100 grams coconut flakes

4 pieces of dried pineapple

4 pieces of dried mango

2 tablespoons coconut yogurt

Lastly…

1. You will need two normal sized drink glasses to build your parfait layers in.

2. Start with a layer of chia pudding, then a layer of muesli and fresh mango on top of this.

3. Do the exact same layers one more time.

4. Finish off your parfaits with a spoonful of coconut yoghurt, crumbles from the Glow Bar, coconut flakes and a slice of dried pineapple and dried mango

Enjoy!

Family Farm

I find Christmas one of those times of year where everything turns from busy to manic.  For us, this year was no different, in fact it was probably worse.  We have been juggling running the business over our first Christmas, we moved house and have our 18-month-old finding delight in unpacking everything Mummy has just put neatly away in drawers.

However despite the chaos and navigating shopping centre car parks there is something just a little bit magical about Christmas.

Despite boxes still unpacked at home we managed to find time to put up our Christmas tree.  This year Indi was old enough to be properly involved as she aptly nominated herself as chief decorator.  Sometimes in this busy world we forget to stop and enjoy the moment we are in but watching Indiana marvel at the colours, shapes and sparkles on each decoration was definitely a moment to be cherished.

Christmas Day for our little farm family will be spent doing the things we love to do.  Josh will be up catching the first waves of the day; I will be meeting friends for our annual Christmas run and Indiana will be hurtling herself up and down the hallway of the house chasing Zali.

Lunchtime will be spent in the backyard, enjoying a causal lunch with both friends and family, eating great food, drinks and laughter.

Despite our good fortune with health and a loving family some people are not as fortunate as us at Christmas and from everyone at The Farm Wholefoods we continue to support the Wayside Chapels ‘Donate a Plate’ appeal.  I am very humbled by all the support our customers and staff gave to this charity and through this generosity we have been able to help 30 people celebrate this Christmas with a beautiful meal, surrounded by warm and generous people.

However you spend this festive season we wish you a safe and healthy time and want to thank everyone for their amazing support in 2015.  We still pinch ourselves daily that this dream has turned into a reality.

Have a Merry Christmas.

Lots of Love, The Farm Family.
